If you fancy trying your hand at painting lichens, I've created a new tutorial starting January 7th which introduces the subject for which I have painted several different types of lichens for you to try, and maybe I'll include a little moss too in this exciting new lesson. The tutorial will be available on the 7th of January, 2025 but is available to pre-book with a 25% discount by using the code: January-Start!

The tutorial will provide a little background information about lichens and their terminology, with easy to understand information on growth forms; so whether foliose, fruticose or crustose, you can understand what you are looking at and will be better informed to illustrate the chosen lichen subjects. Also, discussed is where you might find different lichens, such as on trees and branches, in urban environments, at the coast or even on gravestones!
You will learn how to observe their features, plus a little about using photography to explore the details and to get the most out of the subject. Next you will draw and paint the lichen structures, learning how to mix the delicate colours and colour shifts, as well as the various watercolour techniques used to paint those beautiful surface textures. By the end of the tutorial you should have a basic understanding of the feature and be able to sucessfully paint lichens.
The tutorial is available on a dedicated webpage, which is filled with resources and includes downloadable pdf documents, photographic images, over 4 hours of video with step-by-step images and references for further study, for those of you will no doubt want to continue your lichen painting journey.
The full cost is £40 but you can pre book for £30 today and until the 6th January. What better way to start the New Year!
